By self-analysis (which sounds very boring but isn’t, actually, once you start), self-awareness and listening to your feelings and hearing your reactions. This probably sounds very new-agey type psycho-babble but it isn’t. We are so surrounded by pressure, technology, ‘noise’ meaning interference from others and people’s (normally) negative views and criticism that we forget that we have the keys to our own beliefs, desires, choices and fulfilment already within us but they are just getting drowned out by all the rest.
This is one of the reasons why meditation, being in nature, doing yoga are so powerful at helping us recover our peace of mind and re-source and re-energise ourselves. These give us the distance and freedom to step back, relax, open the doors to our minds and then we can think, and feel.
So back to figuring out who you are – you need to go back to your roots, peel away all the layers to before you had predeterminations, outside influences and peer pressure heaped upon you.
It takes some time to find out, so it is best to do it slowly and quietly over several days or even weeks. Start by thinking back to your childhood, what were the beliefs and values of those around you, what predeterminations did you pick up? Then as you grew older, who influenced you? Did teachers have strong opinions on what was ‘good’ or ‘bad’? Further education and career options, were they what you really wanted or were you ‘encouraged’ to do something by others?
Just think of who/what you dreamt of becoming when you were a child, your favourite games, the things you did then and do now where you were/are happiest, where you feel totally you, in the flow. What energises you and when do you totally forget the time go by? And then, the opposite – what makes you uncomfortable, tired, stressed…
The answers and results of all the above are tell-tale signs of who we really are.
It is a wonderful and rewarding journey which can totally revolutionise our life, our drive and our happiness! To start this, you can download Module 1 of the SCOPE process for career fulfilment. It takes you through the first stage along this path.
