Do we concentrate properly these days or are we totally blindsided by so much going on that we have lost the ability to really hear, read or see?

I know I think I have been clear on things, hit send on the email and then get back a reply that makes me think what on earth are they talking about? Due to a total misinterpretation on their part? Maybe, or maybe it’s that I just haven’t been clear because I know what is in my head and don’t go through the necessary steps to explain my thoughts and ideas to those that aren’t yet telepathic 😉

Perfect example this week – I was emailing my journalist/reporter about the new project I am working on, Deliciously Older. This is for the 50+ age group, business people who fall into one of the following categories: aware of younger highflyers climbing up and pushing them out, approaching retirement (or already retired) and not looking forward to disappearing into static ‘old’ nonentity status, wanting a career change or to set up a new business/activity or simply just bored to death and wanting a bit of spark and passion back in their lives…  Well, I thought I had been crystal clear and she thought I was talking about a type of rebel style controversial 50+ woman’s online magazine…

We both looked back over out emails and saw where we had not read, heard, listened or been clear – lol. Now that could have made for some interesting work and articles!

There can even be misinterpretation of physical movements… I live in France where everyone kisses each other when they see each other, home, in town, at work, wherever you are – also they stand much closer to each other –  both of which can feel like an invasion of personal space, or a ‘come on’ depending on your culture and interpretation!

Coming back to the listening, hearing, reading, writing – how focused are you normally on what you write or say and on what you read or hear? Do you concentrate 100% on the tasks or does life and work invade your concentration so you end up multi-tasking with fleeting snippets of concentration that jump off in all directions?

What if we all tried to really focus 100% on what we are doing – particularly when it involves communication? It makes for so much less pressure, more efficiency and the people we are communicating with feel more valued to have your full attention and relaxed that they really do understand what you mean.

How much time would it save you?  Even more important, how better would you feel?
