For many people it is the time of year for the annual review. All my clients are talking about it at the moment – either they are reviewing their team or they are being reviewed. It can be a time for soul-searching and stress but also for support, encouragement and appreciation.

When I used to be reviewed, all those years ago before I set up my own businesses, I was never particularly bothered by them, to be honest I found them rather a waste of time because they followed the same format – what you have done well, what the company is particularly pleased about, what promotion you are getting, what salary increase and bonus. They never took very long for me as during the year if I ever wanted more responsibility, money or didn’t like/agree with something I used to go straight in to my boss and talk about it. I was never one for waiting for an annual review to broach any subject or negotiate my desired outcome.

The importance and seriousness of an annual review can be very different depending on your company policy. I haven’t noticed a marked difference in different countries, there seems to be just as much variety whatever the culture.

Whether you are having a ‘quick chat’ with your boss/team member in the local café or whether it is a lengthier, official meeting you need to be well prepared.

The main issues to consider are:

  • Performance
  • Fulfilment
  • Promotion / Other signs of trust and confidence
  • Career / Life goals and balance
  • Salary / Bonus / Other benefits
  • Loyalty / Appreciation / Support
  • Training / Growth / Other options

To help you analyse your situation and be well-prepared for this review, here is a downloadable Annual Review Checklist covering the main topics to consider for a positive and productive meeting.
